ACTION ALERT
Make One Call on June 20th to Save Early Childhood Education and After-School Programs in NYC
Background:
The final budget for New York City is due June 30th. Mayor Bloomberg’s budget proposal would cause more than 47,000 children to lose child care and after-school programs. The City’s subsidized child care programs are often the only opportunity that low-income children have to participate in an early childhood education program and are crucial for school readiness and school success. The City’s Out-of-School Time (OST) and Beacon after-school programs give children a safe, educational setting to attend after the school bell rings. Advocates for Children has joined the Campaign for Children to oppose these massive cuts.
Take Action:
Join the Campaign for Children’s Call-In Day!
Call 1-855-466-7517 on Thursday, June 20th between 9 am and 6 pm to ask City leaders to reject cuts to child care and after-school programs.
You can use this script as a guide:
Hi. My name is ________. I’m calling to urge you to save child care and after-school programs. With the proposed budgets cuts, more than 47,000 NYC children are at risk of losing the educational opportunities that pave the way for success. Child care programs give children an early childhood education and help young children prepare for school. After-school programs give children a safe, educational place to go after the school bell rings. Both of these programs help children learn while their parents are at work. Do not balance the City’s budget on the backs of children and hard-working families. We’re counting on YOU to restore the funding to save child care and after-school programs. Thank you.
If no one answers, leave a voicemail message!
Calls to the number above will be automatically connected to one of the City leaders in charge of the budget. Despite what message you get from their office, please be assured that these are the key people who are making budget decisions.
Forward this alert to others who may be interested in taking action.
