CITYWIDE COUNCIL ON SPECIAL EDUCATION LAUNCHES RELATED SERVICES
SURVEY IN RESPONSE TO PARENTS CONCERNS CITYWIDE

The Citywide Council on Special Education (CCSE) has developed a short survey to gather feedback from parents. The survey is directed at parents of children with IEP’s receiving related services throughout the five boroughs.

Related Services can be provided in one of two ways.

1. Sometimes the NYC Department of Education (DOE) will provide the services with its own staff or with the staff of associated agencies.

2. If the DOE is unable to provide the services itself due to a shortage of related service providers, a Related Services Authorization (RSA) will be issued to the parent. This allows the parent to use a certified independent service provider at no cost to them.

Since the beginning of the school term, there have been many complaints from parents whose children have not received related services. The lack of services is across all age ranges, preschool through high school. Parents from publicly funded private schools (NPS), parochial schools and charter schools have also complained about the lack of services.

The English version of the survey can be found at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QZ7RVJG

The Spanish version of the survey can be found at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PR32C82

The CCSE is hoping to collect data on whether the lack of related services being performed is due to a shortage of therapists in a related field such as speech and language, OT, PT, etc…, confined to a specific borough or District(s) or perhaps, a function of a more systemic problem unrelated to the therapists and specialists who work with children in need of services.
