Conversations Regarding New York City’s

Special Education Initiative

“A Shared Path to Success”

Last year, our NYC community schools embarked on a commitment

to increase educational opportunities and improve outcomes

for students with disabilities. Where are we now?

Focus

Hear from a diverse group of panelists including

NYC DOE Leadership, Network Special

Education Administrators, Principals, an IEP

Teacher, Advocate and Parents of children who

have transitioned to school age special education

services.

This informal roundtable discussion will focus on

the philosophy as well as the legal responsibilities

of developing high quality IEPs. Learn how

students with disabilities are educated with a

wide range of supports and services that may

include different types of classes and services for

different parts of the day in their home zoned

school. Learn more about the Common Core

Curriculum.

Hear about the challenges and successful

approaches experienced during the past year by

school communities as they worked to provide

appropriate special education services in the

Least Restrictive Environment.

Continue the discussion on how school

communities can support and welcome students

receiving special education services to ensure

inclusion and positive learning outcomes.
