CogniTech Café’s Free Assistive Technology Support to individuals with disabilities
The CogniTech Café’s Free Assistive Technology Support to individuals with disabilities continues to assist people for free thanks to the support of the JCC in Manhattan. Together our aim is to address the needs of individuals with learning, physical, visual, hearing, and communication challenges. We are committed to providing unique solutions for empowering children and young adults through assistive technologies, fostering greater participation in education, workplaces, or leisure activities.
Assistive technologies may be used to augment a individual’s ability to communicate; support writing and reading needs of individuals with learning challenges; or provide direct access to learning materials for individuals who have vision, hearing, or physical impairments. Parents and individuals need to become informed consumers of such tools in order to advocate successfully in the school systems or workplaces. We are available to support, train, and problem-solve any assistive technology need with individuals and families. In NYC, students are guaranteed such support by the Chancellor’s Continuum of Services Appendix B. Under Federal law all children are entitled to a “free and appropriate education”, and assistive technologies often provide such a means toward success. Information about the more formal assistive technology services and referral process for NYC residents can be found here: Regional AT information or District 75 AT Information. Students outside of NYC should consult their regional offices and State resources (we can assist them with finding such resources as well).
All interested individuals must make an appointment by e-mail or phone (details below)–we are not available for walk-in services. During our one hour consultations with families/individuals, we also help them navigate school, public, and private resources for more formal assistive technology and augmentative communication evaluations when needed. Collaborating professionals are welcome to accompany the family or individual as well. Individuals are also invited to return with questions or for actual support for assistive technology products they acquire.
Free assistive technology consultation and support is available on select Sundays of each month. Please note that it is by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, contact Mark Surabian at ATHelp@me.com or call 917-586-8000 if you do not have e-mail.
