How We Started
WELCOME TO OUR FAMILY! Families helping Families Resource u0026#038; Recreation Center, Inc. is a Staten Island based not-for-profit corporation that was organized January 7, 2008 by seven families whose lives have been touched by a loved one with a disability. Families helping Families Resource u0026#038; Recreation Center, Inc (FHF) provides disabled individuals and their families the full level of support and education necessary to successfully cope with and overcome the challenges associated with disabilities at no charge. The free services of FHF are available to any family coping with a disability, regardless of the type of disability, geographic location, or financial status of the family. FHF will provide a comprehensive level of support and guidance through conducting disability related research and education, educational advocacy, and a wide variety of support groups, recreational programs and activities. These activities include organized playgroups, technology, homework help programs, social skills clubs, and a wide assortment of workshops. FHF will utilize computer technology to teach families how to use the internet to learn about their child’s disability, research treatments, specialists, medications, services and system supports, as well as disability laws. Mission Statement
Our Mission Statement Families Helping Families was founded by families of children with disabilities dedicated to providing other families with the full level of support and education necessary for them to successfully cope with and overcome the challenges associated with disabilities. We are committed to providing a comprehensive level of support and guidance through educational advocacy, technology, a wide variety of support groups, homework help programs, workshops, recreational programs and activities such as organized playgroups, social skills groups, theater and arts enrichment programs, related services, and group outings to support the entire family.

How can YOU help us!!! Donations Families Helping Families is a State Education Department Approved 501C3 not for profit organization. Our staff are all unpaid volunteers and our organization relies solely on donations. These donations help us to continue to provide quality advocacy services to children with special needs. Volunteers and Community Service Opportunities FHF is a service organization committed to providing resources and recreation to children with special needs and their families. Free Services: * Advocacy and Support * Parent Workshops * Family Fun Events * Parent Training * Turning 5 Workshops * Recreational Programs Let our advocates help you with: * Advocating for your child’s right to a Free and Appropriate Public Education in the Least Restrictive Environment (appropriate services, proper placement, frequency and duration of services, group size, or private school). * “Turning 5” Specialists * Reviewing reports and evaluations with you, providing detailed explanations. * Attendance and Representation for your child at: – IEP Meetings – Resolution Meetings – Impartial Hearings * Assessing and developing goals.* Developing and writing impartial hearing requests; preparing evidence packages, appeals, and answers to appeals. * Explaining how the results of your child’s evaluations impact your child’s learning process. Helpful Advocacy Tips
Tips of the Week! Please remember if you wish to speak to a specific teacher or service provider at your child’s IEP meeting OR if you wish to discuss goals developed for your child by a specific service provider THEN you must submit in writing, at least one week prior to the meeting, your request to have those specific service providers to be in attendance at your IEP meeting. Please DO NOT ASSUME that a particular person will be in attendance at your child’s IEP meeting unless their name is stated as an attendee on your meeting notice. For those of you who receive private services outside the school, you MUST make sure your private providers have submitted their progress reports, goals, and WRITTEN justification for any recommendations to increase services, decrease group sizes or for 12 month services. Attention All Parents! If your child has an IEP and you feel he/she needs a summer PROGRAM (not summer school) to avoid regression and to catch up on their delay, PLEASE CONTACT US ASAP!!
